At the Milwaukee Coalition on Housing & Homelessness (MCHH), we believe that people with lived experience of homelessness should have a voice in every level of leadership and service. We actively engage and consult with individuals who have experienced homelessness to ensure our policies and projects reflect real experiences, needs, and solutions. This commitment to authentic collaboration empowers those we serve and helps build a more inclusive, effective approach to ending homelessness in our community.

All CoC member agencies have access to lived experts who can support and strengthen their work.

Through the Milwaukee CoC’s local planning grant, MCHH is able to allocate funding to fairly compensate lived experts for their work in strengthening and improving the homelessness response system. Lived experts are paid by MCHH after the hiring organization submits an invoice. Consultants can choose how they’d like to receive payment—via gift card, ACH transfer, or Visa gift card—delivered either digitally or by mail.

Equitable compensation is a core priority for MCHH. Lived Experts are not volunteers—they are valued partners who bring essential knowledge and perspective to our Continuum of Care. Compensation varies by activity. Hourly engagements are paid between $15 and $20 per hour, while some activities are compensated through a fixed stipend. Specific rates are shared with each Lived Expert as new opportunities become available.
